When they finally invent time travel, I will be on the first boat to 1536 for a front-row seat in the Cistine Chapel – just for the thrill of watching Michelangelo, prone on a scaffold, paintbrushes in hand and furrowed brow, creating his masterpieces.
But while I wait for this scientific breakthrough to materialise, I can at least quench my curiosity by visiting my friend and illustrator/animator/sometime rugby player Simon Spilsbury, hard at work on a mural he’s been commissioned to paint, across the entire reception wall of London marketing agency Meteorite. He is currently about a third of the way through – an epic creation full of characters, words, energy flowing from left to right….
He refers to his rough sketches of the piece in its entirety, but freely admits that he often strays from this, going off on a tangent as the pen takes him for a walk – and it is this spontaneity that shines through.
